A Jakob Green Wall system has been installed in Drapers Garden in the heart of London, with Jakob stainless steel cables and spacers used to form the structures.
Built in 2009, the 14-storey Drapers Garden office complex in London's banking district featured a new public garden and roof gardens for residents. The building also incorporated a number of sustainability features which resulted in it achieving a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.
The green walls are fixed in several places to the walls around the garden of the 270,000 square meter building and help to provide cleaner air in the urban environment and increase biodiversity - providing a natural habitat for wildlife in general and bats in particular.
It provides an ideal habitat for wildlife, with bat boxes having been installed in the green wall. As well as encouraging biodiversity, a green wall in urban areas can also help improve local air quality, both by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, and by trapping dust and other pollutants. They can also help in areas where graffiti can be a problem and act as an effective deterrent by making it difficult to apply graffiti to walls.
